Mechanical Strain and Other Problems Related to Fabrication of III-V Semiconductor Nanostructures

In this presentation, I will describe results that we have obtained trying to understand some "side effects" occurring during processing steps of III V semiconductors for the fabrication of nanostructures for photonic applications. One of the issues is mechanical strain. Crystal deformation can result from the growth of dielectric thin films at the surface of the semiconductor material, and further processing of the layered materials. I will show measurements and numerical simulations on this problem. Another important issue is the occurrence of point defects due to "energetic" ions used for plasma etching. I will describe experiments that we have designed to investigate defect formation in quantum well structures grown on InP, after exposure to different etching plasmas. These experiments use spectroscopic tools such as photo-luminescence and cathodo-luminescence, trying to include the spatial resolution in the approach to understand effects that can occur during nanostructures etching. During plasma etching, depending on the gases used, point defects as well as crystal deformation can affect the heterostructures, even with quite moderate ion energy.

Jean-Pierre Landesman is a Professor at the University of Rennes-1 (France). He graduated from the “Ecole Centrale de Paris” (School of Engineering) and received his PhD in Materials Science from the University of Strasbourg (France). He has worked with different companies involved in electronic and opto-electronic semiconductor device research and development. He was first with Philips Research Laboratories, and then with Thomson-CSF Corporate Research (this company is now Thales). In 2000, he moved to the University of Nantes (France) as a Professor, and in 2011 to his present position at the University of Rennes-1. From 2012 to 2016 he was the Director of the Institute of Physics at Rennes, a joint research institute affiliated to the CNRS and to the University. In 2017-2018, he was a visiting professor at McMaster University (Engineering Physics Department).   Jean-Pierre Landesman has co-authored 86 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, he has been invited to a number of universities and private research centers in different countries (Germany, Brazil, China, Japan, USA, Spain, Canada).
